POSITIVE INTERVENTION EXAMPLE
A Team-Based Positive Leadership Intervention: Maintaining or Building Market Share

This is an example of a session that I might create for a team or business. Any session would need to be fine-tuned to fit the members of your team or organization, your specific challenges and the goals you have for the session. This would include work in the planning and facilitation of the session, as well as follow-up recommendations.

Your Business Challenge:
Business is going well but needs to expand into new markets to maintain growth.

Associated Research Finding:
Frederickson’s Broaden and Build theory holds that positive emotions increase creativity and help people come up with novel solutions. Other research indicates that high performing teams (defined by productivity, customer ratings and 360 feedback) have more positive interactions.

Positive Leadership Intervention:
Gather Team members for a 2 hour meeting (longer if needed). Spend the first 30 minutes getting the team to discuss their previous success in selling the product line:
Use the following questions to target the discussion:
1. What are our key advancements?
2. What positive lessons have we learned?
3. How does the product enrich people’s lives?

Also:
1. Publicly acknowledge ALL successes
2. Review the successes noted, reinforce positive emotions.

Then:  Open the Brainstorming component (1.5 hours) ---no evaluation, just idea generation.
Use the following questions to guide the Brainstorming:
1. What new markets could benefit from our product?
2. How do we access those markets in a way that benefits consumers?
3. How do we build brand loyalty in new markets?

Targeted Goal:
The session should provide a list of possible new markets and potential avenues for accessing and maintaining those markets. The focus on success in the target area should generate more creative solutions than if the session focused on the "problem" of limited markets. Further, the key questions should focus the Team on collaborative marketing that matches product to consumer needs.
