ONGOING RESEARCH
"Research... is the concentrated examination and correlation of the multitudinous phenomena co-existent in some specific field of activity."
- Dr. Seuss in The Seven Lady Godivas.

At this stage I have three research projects underway. These are open-ended projects because I hope to track how workplaces change over time as people receive more education and development. Please see the attached consent form if you are interested in being a participant.

By submitting a story, you are indicating that you have read the consent form, understood its contents and agree to participate in the research. Thank you in advance for furthering positive psychology research and practice.

POSITIVE ORGANIZATIONAL RESEARCH

2007-01 Research Project: Positive Organizational Stories
Please send your stories of how you or someone at your organization has shown excellence or humanity in the workplace. Typically positive behaviour revolves around making the workplace more humane, respectful or simple stories of empathy. Thus your story could focus on positive behaviours, positive emotions or anything that increased the health and well-being of your workplace. This is where workers move away from roles and behave as people. I am looking for stories that show how we are all part of the workplace and the recognition of the workplace community.

2007-02 Research Project: Addressing Mental Health Issues at Work
I am looking for stories about coping with mental health issues at work. Managers, supervisors and union leaders can often be the first people to see signs of mental illness or addictions and often feel out of their depth in helping the person. This might be dealing with an employee who has a problem or and employee whose spouse or children are facing mental heath or addiction problems. Please send in your struggles and stories about how mental health issues have affected your workplace and how you have dealt with them. The focus here is on understanding how those without specific training go about addressing this challenging and common workplace issue. What information did you wish you had? The goal is to develop key resources that manager, supervisors and union leaders might access to help them deal with these issues more effectively.

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH

2007-03 Research Project: Vicarious Resilience Study
Helping professionals are familiar with the concepts of "vicarious trauma" or "compassion fatigue" when referring to the challenges of working with people experiencing distress. However, researchers have recently started to look at the BENEFITS or working with people who have experienced trauma (see Hernandez, P., Gangsei, D. & Engstrom, D. (2007). Vicarious resilience: A new concept in work with those who survive trauma. Family Process, 46(2), 229-241). The focus of this project is to understand what benefits clinicians receive from seeing clients get better, overcome obstacles or exceed everyone's expectations. Please submit a story on what specific strengths you have seen clients exhibit and how this has improved your resilience or changed your outlook, either as a professional or as a person.
